P&O Cruises Australia Introduces A Food Revolution, The Pantry Is Here !

P&O Cruises is tempting travellers to try its new Pantry onboard Pacfic Jewel with a special short video providing a taste of the new dining concept, which debuted earlier this month.
The video shows off the design, décor and cuisine of The Pantry, which features eight tantalising outlets in a contemporary, café-style setting.

The Pantry - aft dining area

Replacing the ship’s traditional buffet, the Pantry is a game-changer for cruising.  The concept will also feature on P&O Cruises’ latest ships, Pacific Aria and Pacific Eden, which will join the cruise line’s fleet in November this year.

It’s Blue Versus Red in Carnival's Fun Bar Battle

Just as State of Origin pits the Blues against the Maroons, Carnival Cruise Line is injecting some colourful rivalry into Carnival Spirit’s pool deck.

When the Australian-based superliner cruises back to Sydney in August following a US$44 million dry dock, its mid-ship pool area will feature new bars and eateries including the BlueIguana Tequila Bar, offering a range of tequilas plus margaritas and Mexican beers, and a Caribbean-inspired RedFrog Rum Bar, bringing the tastes of the tropics onboard with exotic brands of rum infusing daiquiris, mojitos and coladas.

With the tequila bar in the blue corner of the Lido deck and the rum bar in the red corner, the bars will be constantly battling for guests’ attention with team chants and a daily mixology contest where rum is pitted against tequila as guests compete to have their drink voted the daily cocktail special.

BlueIguana Tequila Bar

Carnival Cruise Line Vice President Australia Jennifer Vandekreeke said the colourful cruise contest was another way Carnival amped up the fun factor on its ships.

“The friendly rivalry between our blue and red bars creates a great vibe on deck and livens up the atmosphere while our guests enjoy a cocktail by the pool,” Ms Vandekreeke said.

“The bars are quite different and because the bar staff really get into the competition, we often find that by the end of the cruise, guests are either die-hard RedFrogs or Team BlueIguana. It’s all a bit of fun and ensures everyone has a team they can belong to.”

RedFrog Rum Bar

With the addition of the new poolside bars during Carnival Spirit’s dry dock in August, the ship’s existing Mexican and Caribbean theme nights will be transformed into BlueIguana's Mexican Fiesta and RedFrog's Caribbean Beach Party.

The refit will also see Carnival Spirit welcome its first celebrity chef partnership, with Guy’s Burger Joint flipping out burgers hand-crafted for Carnival Cruise Line by Californian chef Guy Fieri, the BlueIguana Cantina, a Mexican cantina with tacos and burritos and a vintage cocktail “pharmacy” called Alchemy Bar, which will mix up a heady range of new onboard elixirs.

Carnival Australia CEO Ann Sherry And Timor-Leste Special Adviser Steve Bracks Hail First Cruise Ship Visit to Dili

In a stunning demonstration of Timor-Leste’s progress as a free and independent nation, P&O Cruises’ Pacific Jewel at the weekend made the first ever cruise ship visit to the national capital Dili.

Carnival Australia CEO Ann Sherry and Steve Bracks, special adviser on governance to the Timor-Leste Prime Minister, hailed Pacific Jewel’s visit as a significant step forward for the country.

“After years of struggle, Timor-Leste finally won its independence only in 2002, but even five years ago few could have imagined nearly 2000 cruise tourists going ashore in Dili,” Ms Sherry said.

“Australia has strong ties to Timor-Leste on its path to nationhood and there is no doubt that Australians have been willing the Timorese people and their country to succeed.

“So, the arrival of the first cruise ship is an affirmation of Timor-Leste’s potential as an attractive cruise destination and the part tourism can play to build its economy.”

Saturday’s Timor-Leste call during Pacific Jewel’s return from dry dock and major refurbishment in Singapore was an opportunity to test Dili’s capacity to host a superliner visit.

The tender call was eagerly anticipated by the Dili community who were excited to welcome their first ever cruise tourists.

Pacific Jewel in the bay at Dili

On the eve of the visit, former Victorian Premier, Steve Bracks, who, since 2007, has been a special adviser to the Timor-Leste Prime Minister, said it sent a powerful signal about the country’s progress.

“Having hundreds of cruise visitors come ashore in Dili to experience the sights, sounds and culture of Timor-Leste is another positive stepping stone in the country’s progress as a free and independent nation,” Mr Bracks said.

“Pacific Jewel’s visit to Dili has been keenly anticipated by the government and the local community who are keen to make tourism a much valued feature of the local economy in a country that has so much to offer visitors in cultural experiences.

“It will also be an enriching experience for the cruise visitors who will no doubt come away with memories that will last a lifetime. Congratulations to everyone in Timor-Leste and Australia for their efforts to make this inaugural visit a success, which I hope will also be the first of more to come.”

In May 2002, Timor-Leste became the first sovereign state of the 21st century following a long and traumatic struggle for independence.  Australia played a key part leading up to independence. In 1999, current Governor General, Sir Peter Cosgrove, led an international peacekeeping force which oversaw the transition to independence.

Ms Sherry said Pacific Jewel’s Dili call was consistent with Carnival Australia’s efforts in recent years to open up new cruise destinations in countries such as Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.

“In addition to taking our passengers to otherwise remote destinations offering fabulous scenery and cultural experiences, cruise tourism can become a valuable part of island economies,” Ms Sherry said. “I hope that Timor-Leste’s potential to take its place on the cruising map can be realised.”

A second P&O Cruises’ call to Timor-Leste is scheduled for September 2016 when Pacific Eden will visit Dili.

In another initiative enabling remote communities to participate in the economic benefits of cruising, the P&O Pacific Partnership with Save the Children raises funds for education and health facilities in the South Pacific.

Carnival Corporation also recently unveiled a tenth cruise brand – fathom – introducing ‘social impact travel’ enabling people to work with communities on economic, environmental and educational needs. fathom’s maiden voyage from Miami on a seven-day cruise cycle to the Dominican Republic will depart in April next year.

New Look Pacific Jewel Opens the Doors to Its Pantry

P&O Cruises has opened the doors to its new Pantry, with Pacific Jewel becoming the first of the cruise line’s ships to offer the ground-breaking dining concept following a multi-million dollar refit.

Guests on Pacific Jewel’s current cruise from Singapore to Brisbane have been enjoying the new international food market, which features eight enticing outlets in a stylish, modern setting.

P&O Cruises Senior Vice President Sture Myrmell said he was thrilled to see the Pantry concept come to life.

“We've been working on this part of our onboard food revolution for some time and to see the concept become reality is very exciting. It's a game-changer – and it’s clear from our guests’ reaction that they love it,” Mr Myrmell said.

The Pantry - aft dining area

“The Pantry is a dining experience like no other at sea. Designed as an international food market, it features eight bespoke outlets reflecting the many flavours Australians love to eat.”

Replacing the former buffet area on deck 12 of Pacific Jewel, The Pantry provides an all-inclusive dining experience, with delicious food and great design creating a contemporary café vibe.

Inspired by modern Australia, Hook’s Fish and Chips is themed like a beachfront restaurant with white tiles and bleached driftwood, Mexicana embraces the Aztec look with cactus-inspired tiles, the Grill is styled like an industrial burger bar and the monochrome facade of the Sugar Bar is a deliberate contrast to the rainbow colours of the decadent sweets and cakes on display. With its cheeky name, Fat Cow carvery is all about meat, Curry House dishes up modern Indian, Stix serves popular Asian food and drinks are available at the blue and white tiled Coffee Bar.

Diners can choose from communal long tables to lounge chairs and high tables, with scattered pictures, plants, fruit bowls and books adding to the relaxed urban café feel of the venue, created by Tillberg Design of Sweden.

The Pantry - Communal Tables

Mr Myrmell said the cruise line was looking forward to opening its next Pantry outlets on its latest ships, Pacific Aria and Pacific Eden, which will debut in Australia in November.

Following the ship’s drydock in Singapore, Pacific Jewel now also features P&O’s first Pandora jewellery outlet, a new program of parties and a concert-style production show ‘Off the Charts’.

Carnival Australia Proud of its Leadership Role as Cruising Achieves One Million Passengers a Year Landmark

Carnival Australia is proud of its leading role in the landmark achievement of a million Australian cruise passengers a year, CEO Ann Sherry said today following the release of the cruise industry’s latest annual growth report.

Ms Sherry said the million passengers milestone – achieved six years ahead of forecast – also again confirmed cruising’s position as the stunning success story of Australian tourism.

“Building on more than a decade of double digit annual growth, cruising is at the centre of a tourism phenomenon that goes from strength to strength,’ Ms Sherry said.

“In addition to dramatic increases in passenger numbers from year to year, market penetration based on population in Australia surged to a world leading 4.2% in 2014.

“When we set the target of a million Australians cruising by 2020, such an audacious goal was considered wildly ambitious but here we are celebrating the milestone’s achievement six years earlier.

CarnivalAustralia logo bio

“This achievement is an indication of how Australians have taken cruise holidays to their hearts and their huge choice of brands, ships and fabulous destinations in our own region and internationally.

“With its seven distinctive brands and its industry leadership, I am very proud of the part Carnival Australia has played in surpassing the million passengers a year landmark.

“Such phenomenal growth makes another ambitious target – 10% market penetration -- a realistic and achievable goal for the world’s most dynamic and exciting cruise market.”

In 2014, cruise passenger numbers increased by a further 20.4% with 1,003,256 Australians taking a cruise holiday.

Figures released by Cruise Lines International Australia (CLIA) show that 170,000 more Australians took a cruise holiday last year than in 2013.

It was the biggest annual increase in passenger numbers since CLIA began compiling the annual cruise industry report in 2002.

Australian Cruise Numbers Break Through the Magic Million Mark

Australians’ love of cruising has propelled the local cruise industry to a new milestone, with latest figures revealing that more than one million Australians took a cruise holiday in 2014.

The record result confirms Australia’s position as the world’s fastest growing source of cruise passengers, with numbers surging 20.4 per cent last year to reach 1,003,256 cruisers.

The landmark achievement of one million passengers in a calendar year comes six years before originally anticipated, and has been driven by an impressive 20 per cent annual average growth for the past 12 years.

The new figures also show Australia has retained its position as the world leader for market penetration, with the equivalent of 4.2 per cent of Australians taking a cruise last year, significantly ahead of the well-established North American market, which ranked second with a market penetration rate of 3.4 per cent.

Released in Sydney today at the newly refurbished Overseas Passenger Terminal, the 2014 Australian Cruise Industry Source Market Report is produced by Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Australasia, based on data received from its cruise line members, which account for more than 95 per cent of the world’s cruise passengers.

Speaking at the report launch, CLIA Australasia Chairman Gavin Smith said Australians’ enthusiasm for cruising was unparalleled around the world, with France the only other major world market to achieve double digit growth (13.6 per cent) in 2014.

Gavin Smith

Mr Smith said Australia’s achievement of 20.4 per cent growth represented an increase of 170,000 passengers compared to 2013, the largest rise in real numbers since CLIA first began collating passenger data in 2002. Australia is now the fourth largest source market in the world for cruise passengers, accounting for 4.5 per cent of world cruisers, behind North America (54.2 per cent), Germany (8 per cent) and UK/Ireland (7.4 per cent).

“These figures show that more and more Australians are realising that cruising is an easy, relaxing way to holiday which represents incredible value for money,” Mr Smith said.  “The expansion of our industry in recent years means there’s now a huge range of ships and itineraries on offer across the globe and I think Australians, who are inveterate travellers, are responding by increasingly factoring a cruise into their holiday plans.”

“Five years ago, the industry thought that it might be possible to achieve one million passengers a year by 2020 – to reach that number in 2014 is an amazing result and shows the true passion Australians have for cruise holidays. If our growth rate continues at just 12.5 per cent for the next six years, we will reach two million passengers by 2020,” Mr Smith said.

Key findings of CLIA Australasia’s 2014 Australian Cruise Industry Source Market Report include:

* The most popular cruise destination for Australians is the South Pacific, attracting more than 390,000 passengers (39 per cent of the market)

* Cruises from domestic ports to Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific  accounted for 67 per cent of Australian passengers in 2014 (671,030 cruisers)

* The continuing popularity of Europe saw the region become Australians’ third most popular ocean cruise destination accounting for 93,529 cruisers

* River cruising numbers surged by more than 60 per cent to 79,530

* The arrival of new ships in Asia prompted a 25 per cent increase in Australian passengers cruising in the region, with numbers rising to more than 55,000

* Cruises of 8-14 days duration remain the most popular attracting 54 per cent of passengers, although shorter cruises of up to four days experienced a 59 per cent surge in numbers

* NSW remains the largest source of cruise passengers, accounting for 41 per cent of the market

* Australians spent an estimated 10 million days at sea in 2014, cruising for an average 9.7 days on ocean cruises and 13 days on river cruises.

Cunard’s Three Queens Perform River Dance on the Mersey in a Salute to Liverpool where the Company Began 175 Years Ago

For the first time, Cunard’s ‘three Queens’ fleet gathered together in spectacular fashion in Liverpool, its spiritual home, as the company marked its 175th anniversary. The event culminated with the three magnificent ocean liners, the largest passenger ships ever to muster together on the River Mersey, lined up across the river just 130 metres apart as the Red Arrows performed a fly-past overhead to the delight of the hundreds of thousands of spectators.

Cunard’s flagship Queen Mary 2 sailed from the Liverpool berth up to the mouth of the Mersey at 10.45am on May 25 (local time) to meet her sisters, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria.  The three ships then sailed in close single file down the river to Liverpool's Pier Head with its iconic Three Graces: The Royal Liver Building, The Cunard Building and The Port of Liverpool Building.  Queen Mary 2 slowed in the river opposite the Cunard Building – Cunard’s headquarters for nearly 50 years until 1967 – with her sister ships stopping ahead of her to create a three ship line-up, watched by spectators of both sides of the river.  Spaced just 400 metres apart, the three ships then performed a graceful 180 degree synchronised turn to starboard.  At the mid-point of the turn, all three ships lay across the river, creating the spectacle of the fleet’s three bows dramatically set against the backdrop of Liverpool’s famous Three Graces. Queen Mary 2 then sounded ‘175’ on her ship’s whistle – first one, then seven short blasts, then five more. With the full turn completed and the 150,000-tonne Queen Mary 2 now in the leading position, her two 90,000-tonne sister ships then glided towards either side of her to create an arrowhead formation, with the flagship just ahead of her two consort ships.  Finally, the entire fleet lined up three abreast across the river just 130 metres apart, as a salute to the Cunard Building and the City of Liverpool.

The Red Arrows fly over Cunards Three Queens on the Mersey

With the three Queens in this tight formation, the Red Arrows flew in formation low over the river, a coup de grace which created a thrilling, once-in-a-lifetime moment for the spectators on shore.   Commodore of the Cunard fleet Christopher Rynd said it had been a privilege to bring the Cunard fleet together on the Mersey for the first time ever to mark Cunard’s 175th anniversary year, as well as the company’s historic and ongoing partnership with Liverpool.      “After months of planning, today the three ships have manoeuvred on the River Mersey as never before, right in front of the Cunard Building, one of Liverpool’s Three Graces and a world heritage site as well as Cunard’s former headquarters,” Commodore Rynd said.

“The Red Arrows flypast at the climax of the ships manoeuvres added a finishing touch to an extraordinary day.

“There can be no more fitting way to celebrate Cunard’s 175th anniversary.  The spectators have been amazing and the numbers extraordinary – all the way from the mouth of the Mersey to Pier Head, we have seen such enthusiastic crowds.”

“There has always been a special bond between Cunard and Liverpool and the north-west, with so many people having worked for or with Cunard over the years. There’s an emotional connection between us. Cunard is more than just a shipping line – it’s a source of pride that means so much to us and everyone associated with it.  It’s a real pleasure to be able to celebrate that enduring bond between us all in such a special way today.”        Cunard Director of Marketing Angus Struthers said Cunard was touched by the fantastic reception the three Queens have received from the people of Liverpool and beyond on this 175 Anniversary day.

Cunards Three Queens Meet on the Mersey River

“It feels like 175 years of stories, people and history linking Cunard to the city have really come alive.  With the Red Arrows flypast adding an amazing extra ‘wow’, it’s been the sort of day we hope parents and grandparents will remember with their children and grandchildren in years to come,” Mr Struthers said.   “It's taken a huge amount of planning and cooperation between Cunard’s ships, the Mersey pilots and Liverpool's cruise operation to make this happen and today is testament to the great results that continue to come out of Cunard's partnership with the city. ”

Closer to home, Sea Princess will make her maiden visit to Busselton in Western Australia on Thursday, giving guests the chance to spend the day exploring nearby Margaret River.

Sea Princess Customer Services Director Angus Wilkinson and Hotel General Manager Tony Pollendine 2

Princess Cruises is the only cruise line to offer a roundtrip world cruise from the southern hemisphere and this year’s itinerary marks the first opportunity for Western Australian cruisers to join a roundtrip world cruise from Fremantle.

Since it began offering annual world voyages from Australia in 2008, including two world cruises in both 2012 and 2013, Princess has carried more than 30,000 Australians on its global odysseys.

Of the 2000 guests sailing today, more than half are doing the full world cruise and about a quarter have previously done a full world cruise with Princess.

Party in Style with P&O Cruises’ New White Nights

Party time on P&O Cruises is about to take on a stylish new shade as the cruise line revamps its onboard entertainment program to include dazzling top deck white parties.

Four new party concepts will be rolled out across the fleet from June including Bianco, the P&O White Party, which is set to be the biggest night on any cruise turning the open deck into a whiteout with special effects such as smoke cannons and a snow finale, white cocktails, live music and everyone dressed in their brightest whites. Along with a DJ pumping out tunes from a specially-designed stage on the dance floor, there will be a selfie wall complete with selfie sticks so partygoers can capture memories of the night to share on social media.

P&O Cruises Entertainment Director Brett Annable said Bianco would be a cruise highlight.

“Inspired by the world’s superclubs and what’s trending in modern Australian venues, Bianco will be the party to be seen at. The next big thing in cruise entertainment, it will be much more than a party - it will be a special event and we think it will fast become the most popular night onboard our ships,” Mr Annable said.

Mr Annable said all ages would be welcome at Bianco but younger cruisers would also be able to enjoy their own dedicated parties.

As part of the revamped entertainment line-up, cocktail nights will take on a glam new look with Gatsby-themed evenings encompassing the cruise line’s classic show, The Velvet Rope, and an after-party evoking all the glitz of the 1920s.

PO Cruises Bianco party

There will also be a retro Back to School party in the nightclub and afternoon Vegas parties, bringing the trademark fun in the sun offered at some of Las Vegas’ most famous day clubs to the pool deck with a DJ, Vegas cocktails and beach balls.

Every cruise of three nights or more will feature the new Bianco night while the Gatsby-themed event and Back to School party will occur on cruises of four nights or more. Pacific Island cruises will continue to offer an afternoon island-themed sailaway party.

Continuing the entertainment revolution onboard, Mr Annable said a new stage show was being introduced, unlike anything ever performed on P&O Cruises’ ships.

“Off the Charts has a contemporary look and feel – it’s more of a concert than a musical. Like the Grammys, there will be individual performances of songs from the best singers of our generation including Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift and Adele. We’ve even brought in several choreographers so each piece of music is totally separate and has a different feel,” he said.

With Off the Charts added into the mix along with musical The Velvet Rope, thought-provoking production Disconnected and contemporary show Life As We Know It, the ships would offer a show for every taste, Mr Annable said.
